Greece: Large-scale Anti-corruption Investigation
26.09.2012On September 20, 2012 in a written reply to parliament, the Greek Minister of Finance Yannis Stournaras announced major investigation on corruption among the political elite. Among the thirty two persons being scrutinized by the local tax inspection (S.D.O.E) is the Chairman of the parliament Evangelos Meimarakis. Following a meeting with Attorney General Janis Tentes, Meimarakis, member of the party "Nea Dimokratia", and former minister of defence, left his position temporarily.
Media mention also the names of the former ministers Giorgos Voulgarakis (Home Affairs) and Michalis Liapis (Transport). "Kathimerini" Daily informs that four of the inspected belong to the leftist PASOK and three to the center-right "Nea Dimokratia". A special parliamentary committee is formed to monitor the case.
