Democratic Principles and Election Practices: The Bamako Declaration in the Bulgarian Context

03.10.2011

The current project deals with a critical issue for the Bulgarian political system: despite Bulgaria’s membership in Euro-Atlantic institutions, vote-buying remains the main instrument for state capture, used blatantly by interest groups and shadow political structures. One of the key principles of democratic societies that warrant the fair and transparent governance, are the firm regulations, enshrined in the election laws. The Bamako Declaration, a program document of the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie, voices the political commitment of the signatories, among which is also Bulgaria, to work for the strengthening and promotion of democratic political culture.

The project includes empirical study and critical analysis of the election process in Bulgaria, as well as training seminars in political leadership for young political leaders from the parliamentary represented parties in Bulgaria.

The project is funded by the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie.
