The controversies over the State Agency for National Security (SANS) are not uniquely Bulgarian. Similar specialized institutions are involved in political conflicts abroad. Rada Smedovska, legal expert at RiskMonitor, writes about these issues in the Capital weekly.
The paper describes an institution analogous to SANS established in 2001 in the Republic of South Africa. The agency provoked political turmoil which finally led to the resignation of the President.
The article is part of a one-year study conducted by Rada Smedovska. It is a comparative study on institutions for fighting organized crime in three countries: the Republic of South Africa, Great Britain and Italy.
