Specialized Institutions for the Combat of Organized Crime

20.08.2008

Is there an institution specialized in combating organized crime? If yes, how is it built? This comparative research answers such questions and describes the institutional design and functioning of three different services specialized in fighting organized crime in Italy, South Africa, and the United Kingdom. At first glance setting up a special body for countering serious organized crime seems an attractive idea. However, no unified model exists for such an institution. Each country develops it according to its institutional, political and social environment. How do these specialized bodies combat organized crime and how effective are they in reality?
