International Narcotics Control Strategy Report
09.03.2012
Earlier this month the State Department released its International Narcotics Control Strategy Report. The document consists of two parts: 1) on the control of chemical substances and 2) on the control of financial crime, related to trafficking.
The text presents country statistical data about Bulgaria (2011):
- 300,000 drug addicts, of which 30,000 are addicted to heroin
- customs seized 246 kg. heroin, 0.6 kg. cocaine, 17 kg. synthetic drugs
- Ministry of Interior caught 4.6 kg. cocaine, 129 kg. heroin and 228 kg. amphetamine substance
We learn further that the harvest of poppy in Afghanistan was weak and alternative opium trade routes have bypassed Bulgaria. Chief Directorate to Combat Organized Crime helped in carrying out major operations in France and Greece, where huge quantities of cocaine were seized. In general the law enforcement institutions remain weak and vulnerable to corruption.
