Monitoring the State Agency for National Security – 2010: Reactions
20.04.2011
April 20, 2011
SANS has started to clear up its hybrid profile and now works on its tasks prescribed by the law: intelligence, analysis and prevention. Nevertheless, the Agency still works beyond its powers and becomes even more secretive. These are the main conclusions drawn by the third monitoring of the State Agency for National Security. The report was presented on April 19, 2011 in Pressclub Sofia Press.
The electronic journal Mediapool lays emphasis on the tendency of SANS to provide only formal annual reports on its activities; the lack of clear criteria for effectiveness and information for the work done in key areas of importance to national security, for example countering the leak of secret information.
The media pay special attention to the criticism toward the parliamentary commission for control over the Agency. The commission was mainly focusing its work on the arrested ex-consultant of the Agency Alexey Petrov and the formal interim reports of the Agency.
The daily newspapers stress RiskMonitor’s recommendation that SANS should continue to clarify its profile and should continue developing as a criminal intelligence and leave its current existence as a hybrid of executive intelligence, investigation and police force.
